Road Trip: Xilitla from Mexico City
Quick Guide to Mexico’s secret, surreal jungle garden
Xilitla
If you are planning a road trip with your friends, Xilitla is the best option. Not only is super cheap to get there, but it has one of the most beautiful landscapes and cascades in Mexico, as one of the most mysterious surreal garden from Sir Edward James.
We had the opportunity to visit other places that are very close too like the waterfall of Tamul, the “Sótano de las Golondrinas” (Cave of Swallows) and Tamasopo.
A road trip from Mexico City to Xilitla, like the one I did can be a great way to explore the beautiful countryside of central Mexico. So here’s a post of a possible rout and some things to see along the way if you have more time.
Road Trip on a budget
This is what we spent in the hole trip for 2 people.
Cost of trip
From CDMX to Xilitla by car: We pass by 2 booths of $74 pesos each.
Gas (total): (Jeep Patriot) 2 tanks and 1/2 full. $1500 pesos.
Entrance to Edward James’s garden: $70 pesos (Low season)
Entrance to the Cave of the Swallows: $30 pesos plus the tip to the guide
Booth heading to Tamasopo de Xilitla: $140 pesos
Entrance booth to Tamasopo: $30 pesos (there is another booth that reads the TAG, which costs $70, TIP just return a little and this is the other cash pay booth that only costs 30 pesos, you save a little)
Tamasopo entrance: $30 pesos plus $10 pesos parking.
Where to eat
The restaurants we visited in Xilitla were two:
1. Amber: the place of Dona
Hidalgo #209, next to the former Convent of St. Augustine in the center of Xilitla.
Great place to have dinner because it opens a little late, but the food is really good, more Italian style, they have good service and has a wide range of wines.
2. Querreque
Hidalgo #201
For breakfast, lunch or dinner is a good choice. It has a very nice terrace where you can watch the sunset. I recommend the “chile hojaldrado”, OMG is delicious!
Just don’t go in a hurry, they take their time to serve everything haha but I promise it is worth your time.
