How to use Mexico City METRO and METROBUS

Guide to public transportation in CDMX

Mexico City metro and metro bus is one of the most effective public transportation systems in the country. This is a guide of how to use the subway and metro bus, if it is your first time in the city.

Mexico City is huge and busy. It’s usually chaotic at peak times. But fortunately there are many options as means of transportation for all types of cases and needs.

With the right information you can have a very relaxed and prepared trip.

Don’t miss my Quick Guide of Mexico City.

Use the Mexico City Subway or Metro like a pro.

How does it work?

The Metro has 12 lines and 195 stations. The box office is always inside of a station and preferably I recommend you buy the amount of tickets you will need, at least, your return.

On the tourniquet you place your ticket with the brown band down, and you can go through. The ticket is not returned.

There are also rechargeable cards, that helps if you don´t want to carry all the tickets. If they don’t have them at the Metro box office (which is quite common) you can buy it at Metro Bus stations.

Cost:

The ticket price is $5 pesos MXN and applies to any stop.

Schedule:

Monday to Friday, 5:00 am to 24:00 hours

Saturdays from 6:00 am to 24:00 hours

Sundays and Holidays is from 7:00am to 24:00 hours.

On your way!

You will always find 2 signs with the name of the direction of the stations. For example, if you want to go from “Hidalgo” to “Coyoacan”, you must take the line 3 towards “Universidad” and stop in Coyoacan.

It Is very simple really, because you have the advantage of having colors, as well as names and symbols.

In case you have to make a connection is just as simple, if you are in “Bellas Artes” which is Line 2 (blue) you go on in the direction of “Cuatro Caminos” get off in “Hidalgo” and then change from line 3 and follow the previous instructions.

Always keep an eye on your things

Remember that Mexico City as every big city, it’s importante to keep an eye and always carry your belongings in front of you, or very well kept, do not wear fancy jewelry, look out always since the pick pockets are always around.

Try to have your route ready before entering the subway to avoid having to search for anything inside the subways or looking at the maps, that way it is pretty easy to see you are a tourist.

How to use the METROBUS
