Because we like to be informed in this blog, here are some terms related to the LGBTQ+ community that you might want to know for Pride Month:

LGBTQ+:

An acronym that stands for lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer/questioning, and other people who identify as non-heterosexual and/or non-cisgender.

Ally:

A person who supports and advocates for the LGBTQ+ community even if they do not identify as LGBTQ+.

Coming Out:

The process of revealing one’s sexual orientation or gender identity to friends, family, or the public.

Gender identity:

a person’s internal sense of gender, which may or may not correspond to the sex assigned at birth.

Gender Expression:

The way a person presents their gender to the world through clothing, hair, mannerisms, and other behaviors.

 

Heteronormativity:

the assumption that heterosexuality is the norm or default sexual orientation.

Homophobia:

prejudice or discrimination against people who identify as LGBTQ+.

Intersectionality:

The interconnected nature of social identities, such as race, gender, sexuality, and class, and how they can create unique experiences of oppression and privilege.

Outing

the act of revealing someone’s sexual orientation or gender identity without their consent.

Pride:

A celebration of the LGBTQ+ community and its history, achievements, and ongoing fights for equality.

Queer:

An umbrella term that can refer to anyone who is not straight and/or cisgender, or as a claimed term for those who identify as LGBTQ+.

Transgender:

a person whose gender identity does not correspond to the sex assigned to them at birth.

Two Spirit:

A term used by some Native Americans to describe a person who identifies with both a male and female spirit.

Non-binary:

A gender identity that does not fit within the binary categories of male and female.

Pansexual:

A sexual orientation that is attracted to people regardless of their gender identity or biological sex.

These terms are just a starting point, and there are many more concepts and identities within the LGBTQ+ community. It is important to approach these issues with an open mind and a willingness to learn and understand.
