Top 5 Restaurants in Coyoacán, Mexico City: Where to Eat
My favorite spots for Mexican food, mezcal, vegan options, and an authentic local atmosphere

Table of Contents
If you’re wondering where to eat in Coyoacán, Mexico City, my advice is not to stick only to the restaurants around the main square. This charming neighborhood has so much more to offer, from traditional Mexican cuisine and mezcal bars to lively cantinas, colorful streets, and a rich cultural scene.
After visiting Coyoacán on different occasions, these are my top 5 favorite restaurants in Coyoacán. Some are perfect for a relaxed lunch, while others are ideal for drinks and a fun afternoon. Each one has something that makes it worth visiting.
If you’re someone who enjoys discovering places with great food, beautiful spaces, and options for different dietary preferences, I think you’ll enjoy this list.
Los Danzantes: One of My Favorite Restaurants in Coyoacán
If I had to recommend just one restaurant from this list, Los Danzantes would be a strong contender.
For me, everything about this place deserves a 10 out of 10: the food, the atmosphere, the decor, and the service. It’s the kind of restaurant that works just as well for a special occasion as it does for enjoying a delicious Mexican meal while exploring Coyoacán.
The Mexican dishes are excellent, and there are options for different tastes and dietary preferences. As a vegetarian, I always appreciate restaurants where I don’t have to settle for just one option when dining out.
They also serve their own mezcal, so if you’d like to explore one of Mexico’s most distinctive spirits, it’s worth trying a glass.
The restaurant has a beautiful, distinctive design, and the service has always been good in my experience.
If you’re looking for the best Mexican restaurants in Coyoacán for a memorable dining experience, Los Danzantes is definitely one of my favorites.
Corazón de Maguey: Oaxacan Cuisine and a Beautiful Atmosphere
Another great option in the heart of Coyoacán is Corazón de Maguey.
This restaurant is another excellent choice for Mexican food, with a focus on the flavors and traditions of Oaxaca. If you enjoy traditional Mexican cuisine, mezcal, and restaurants with their own personality, it’s worth adding to your list.
The decor is beautiful, and the atmosphere makes it a lovely place to sit down for a meal or enjoy a drink after exploring the neighborhood.
For first-time visitors to Mexico City, I think it’s a great option because it combines Mexican cuisine with an experience that feels connected to the local culture.
If you’re planning a food tour of Coyoacán, you could easily include Corazón de Maguey and Los Danzantes in your itinerary.
Ave María: Mexican Food with Delicious Vegan Options
If you’re searching for vegan-friendly restaurants in Coyoacán, Ave María is a place I’d keep on your radar.
It serves very good Mexican food and, something I particularly appreciate, has delicious vegan options.
Finding Mexican restaurants where plant-based dishes feel like a thoughtful part of the menu rather than an afterthought isn’t always easy. That’s why I love discovering places where friends and family with different dietary preferences can enjoy a meal together.
The restaurant also has a pleasant atmosphere, making it a good stop after spending the day walking around Coyoacán.
If you’re planning a trip to Mexico City and looking for vegetarian and vegan food in Coyoacán, Ave María is worth considering.
Centenario 107: A Restaurant-Bar for a Different Kind of Experience
I’d put Centenario 107 in a slightly different category because, to me, it’s more than just a restaurant.
It’s a great restaurant-bar in Coyoacán, especially if you want to enjoy a meal, order some drinks, and spend time with friends.
And here’s my recommendation: try the chapulines, or Mexican grasshoppers.
Chapulines are a traditional Mexican ingredient that might spark curiosity—or even hesitation—if you’ve never tried them before. But if you’re visiting Mexico and want to step outside your culinary comfort zone, this is a great opportunity.
I like this place because it lends itself to a more relaxed experience. You can start with food and stay for drinks instead of feeling like you need to eat and leave.
If you’re looking for a fun afternoon out or a casual place to enjoy drinks in Coyoacán, Centenario 107 is one to consider.
La Coyoacana: A Traditional Mexican Cantina You Can’t Miss
If you want to experience a more traditional and lively side of Coyoacán, La Coyoacana is a must-visit.
It’s a classic Mexican cantina, with a much more relaxed and energetic atmosphere than a conventional restaurant.
My recommendation isn’t necessarily to come here looking for an elegant dinner. The experience itself is a big part of the appeal: order some drinks, enjoy the food, listen to music, and have a good time.
And yes, you may even get to hear live mariachi music, making the experience feel even more distinctly Mexican.
For visitors from the United States, Canada, or Europe who want to experience something more local during their Mexico City trip, a traditional cantina can be a fun way to do just that.
If you’re exploring Coyoacán, I’d save this spot for an afternoon or evening when you simply want to sit back, have a drink, and soak up the atmosphere.
Which Coyoacán Restaurant Should You Choose?
It really depends on the experience you’re looking for.
- For a special meal: Los Danzantes.
- For Oaxacan cuisine and beautiful surroundings: Corazón de Maguey.
- For delicious vegan options: Ave María.
- For a restaurant-bar experience and something adventurous to eat: Centenario 107.
- For drinks, a traditional cantina atmosphere, and mariachi music: La Coyoacana.
What I love about Coyoacán is that you don’t have to limit yourself to just one experience. You can spend the morning wandering its streets, visit a museum, stop for coffee, enjoy traditional Mexican food, and finish the afternoon with drinks.
Exploring Coyoacán with Your Dog
If you’re traveling with your dog, Coyoacán can be a lovely neighborhood to explore on foot. However, I recommend checking each restaurant’s pet policy directly before visiting.
A restaurant that allows dogs on its terrace may not allow them in every area, and policies can change.
Traveling with dogs is an important part of how I enjoy discovering new places, so I always prefer to check in advance rather than arrive and be surprised.
If you’re searching for dog-friendly places in Mexico City, it’s worth planning ahead so you and your four-legged travel companion can enjoy the neighborhood comfortably.
My Tips for Enjoying Coyoacán
Don’t try to visit all five restaurants in one day!
Coyoacán is best enjoyed at a relaxed pace. Start by exploring the historic center, wander through its colorful streets, visit a gallery or museum, and then choose a restaurant based on what you’re in the mood for.
If you’re visiting Mexico City from another country or traveling from another part of Mexico, Coyoacán can easily fill half a day—or even an entire day—of your itinerary.
It’s one of those neighborhoods where the experience isn’t just about checking off tourist attractions. It’s about taking your time, discovering a favorite restaurant, and enjoying the city like someone who lives there.
