There are some travel experiences you know you’ll remember for years, and swimming with whale sharks in Cancun is definitely one of them.
Every year, between June and September, whale sharks arrive in the waters of the Mexican Caribbean to feed. For a few months, travelers have the opportunity to get into the ocean and swim near these incredible animals in their natural habitat.

If you’re planning your next trip for 2027, I recommend looking into tours ahead of time, especially if you’re traveling during July, August or early September.
Where can you swim with whale sharks in Mexico?
Many travelers search for a whale shark tour from Playa del Carmen, but the experience usually begins in Cancun.
For my experience, the tour started early in the morning. A van picked us up in Playa del Carmen and took us to the maritime terminal in Cancun, where we began the boat portion of the tour.
So if you’re staying in Playa del Carmen, you can absolutely do this as a day trip.
What is a whale shark tour like?
The experience starts early in the morning.
When we arrived at the maritime terminal, we were given coffee and bread for a light breakfast before getting on the boat. It’s a good idea not to eat too heavily before the boat ride because the journey can be long and some people may experience seasickness.
If you tend to get seasick, I recommend taking the precautions that normally work for you before getting on the boat.
Once we were ready, we received the equipment needed for the activity:
- Life jacket, which is mandatory.
- Snorkeling equipment.
- Fins.
- Wetsuit, available to rent for an additional cost.
Before leaving, our certified guide explained the safety rules and how to approach the whale sharks correctly.
The most important rule is simple: never touch the animals and always maintain the required distance.
How many people swim with the whale sharks at a time?
One of the things I liked most about this experience was the way the groups were organized.
Only two people and the guide entered the water at a time, and each pair had two opportunities to jump in.
This means you don’t have a large group of people surrounding the same animal, making the encounter feel more controlled and responsible.
For me, this was especially important because when we participate in wildlife tourism, it’s not only about the experience we get. The way we interact with the animals matters too.
How long does it take to find the whale sharks?
The boat ride can take approximately an hour and a half, depending on where the whale sharks are that day and the ocean conditions.
And this is when the excitement really starts.
Once the crew locates the whale sharks, you need to be ready because your opportunity to get into the water can come quickly.
When the guide gives you the signal, you jump in and swim alongside the whale shark.
You never know exactly when the next opportunity will come, so it’s important to pay attention and follow your guide’s instructions.
What is it like to swim with a whale shark?
It’s difficult to describe what it feels like to be in the water and suddenly see an animal this enormous swimming right in front of you.
Whale sharks can reach incredible sizes, but they are gentle filter feeders that primarily feed on plankton and other tiny organisms.
We were incredibly lucky during our tour. We saw many whale sharks and even manta rays.
Watching them move peacefully through the water while you try to keep up with them is an experience that stays with you.
And although you may feel nervous at first, once you’re in the water, the excitement takes over.
What happens after swimming with the whale sharks?
After our time in the water was over, we got back on the boat and headed toward Isla Mujeres.
We finished the day at Punta Norte, where we had some time to relax, enjoy the water and recover after the excitement of the morning.
We were also served ceviche and drinks.
Since I’m vegetarian, I brought my own sandwich to have afterward.
If you have dietary restrictions, I recommend asking in advance what food is included in your tour and bringing an alternative if necessary.
Is swimming with whale sharks worth it?
In my opinion, absolutely.
But not simply because you can say you swam with a whale shark.
What makes this experience special is being able to observe these animals in their natural environment while following guidelines designed to minimize our impact on them.
If you’re planning a trip to Cancun, Isla Mujeres, Playa del Carmen or the Riviera Maya during whale shark season, I would definitely consider adding this experience to your itinerary.
