Bacalar, Mexico: Things to Do, How to Get There & Why You Should Visit the Lagoon of Seven Colors

My 4-Day Experience Exploring One of Quintana Roo's Most Peaceful Destinations

Some places build up a lot of expectations before you ever visit them, and Bacalar was one of those places for me. For years, I had heard about its stunning Lagoon of Seven Colors, breathtaking sunrises, and laid-back atmosphere that encourages you to slow down and truly disconnect.

I finally had the chance to spend four days there while visiting one of my best friends who lives in Bacalar. Instead of packing my itinerary with activities, our plan was simple: relax, paddle through the lagoon by kayak, explore a few local restaurants, stroll around the historic town, and simply enjoy being surrounded by nature.

After this trip, I completely understood why so many travelers fall in love with Bacalar and keep coming back. If you’re planning a trip to Mexico’s Caribbean region and are looking for an alternative to the busy beach towns, here’s everything you need to know about how to get to Bacalar, what to do, and where to eat.

Where is Bacalar?

Bacalar is located in southern Quintana Roo, Mexico, just a short drive from the Belize border. This charming Pueblo Mágico (Magical Town) is best known for the breathtaking Lagoon of Seven Colors, a freshwater lagoon famous for its crystal-clear water and stunning shades of blue.

Unlike destinations such as Cancún or Playa del Carmen, Bacalar has a much slower pace. You won’t find large all-inclusive resorts or a vibrant nightlife scene here. Instead, it’s the perfect destination for travelers who appreciate nature, boutique hotels, local restaurants, and peaceful surroundings.

How to Get to Bacalar

From Playa del Carmen

  • Approximate distance: 275 km (171 miles)
  • Driving time: 3.5–4 hours
  • ADO Bus: approximately 4 hours

The drive is straightforward along Highway 307, passing through Tulum and Felipe Carrillo Puerto before reaching Bacalar.

Renting a car gives you the flexibility to stop along the way and explore more of Quintana Roo at your own pace.

From Cancún

  • Approximate distance: 340 km (211 miles)
  • Driving time: 4.5–5 hours
  • ADO Bus: 5–6 hours

ADO offers comfortable daily bus service from Cancún, Playa del Carmen, and Tulum, making it an excellent option if you prefer not to drive.

If you’re traveling from the United States, Canada, or Europe, the easiest option is to fly into Cancún International Airport and continue your journey south by car or bus.

My Experience in Bacalar

This trip felt very different from most of the vacations I usually take.

There was no packed itinerary or pressure to check attractions off a list.

Instead, we woke up slowly, enjoyed breakfast together, and spent most of our days relaxing by the lagoon.

One morning I even woke up before sunrise hoping to catch the famous colors over the water. Although it was cloudy, it was still one of those quiet moments that reminded me how refreshing it is to slow down.

During those four days, I did exactly what I needed most: rest.

Things to Do in Bacalar

Kayak on the Lagoon of Seven Colors

One of the best ways to experience Bacalar is by kayaking.

The water is usually calm early in the morning, allowing you to fully appreciate the incredible shades of blue that make the lagoon famous.

Swimming in the warm, crystal-clear water is equally unforgettable.

Walk Around Downtown Bacalar

The town center is small, charming, and perfect for exploring on foot.

You’ll find cozy cafés, local boutiques, artisan shops, and relaxed streets that invite you to take your time.

Visit Fort San Felipe

One of Bacalar’s most important historical landmarks is Fort San Felipe.

Besides offering beautiful views of the lagoon, the fort tells the story of Bacalar’s past, including pirate attacks and the Caste War that shaped the region.

It’s a short visit that’s well worth your time if you’d like to learn more about the area’s history.

Where to Eat in Bacalar

During my stay, I visited several places that I’d happily return to.

Trattoria del 46

A wonderful choice if you’re craving fresh Italian cuisine in a cozy atmosphere.

Enamora

One of my favorite breakfast spots.

The food was delicious, and the artistic space made it a lovely place to linger over coffee.

La Playita

One of Bacalar’s most popular restaurants.

Located right by the lagoon, its most distinctive feature is the magnificent tree growing in the center of the restaurant, creating an unforgettable setting.

Annie’s

Perfect for grabbing an ice cream while wandering through downtown.

Mango y Chile

A great place to enjoy a coffee before continuing your walk around town and it has a lot of vegan options

And of course…

I couldn’t leave Bacalar without trying a traditional marquesita for dessert.

Is Bacalar Dog-Friendly?

If you enjoy traveling with your dog, Bacalar is becoming an increasingly pet-friendly destination.

Many boutique hotels now welcome pets, and several restaurants with outdoor seating are happy to accommodate dogs.

As always, it’s best to confirm your hotel’s pet policy before booking, especially if you’re traveling with a medium or large dog.

For those of us who love exploring with our furry companions, Bacalar offers peaceful walks along the lagoon and plenty of opportunities to enjoy nature together.

How Many Days Should You Spend in Bacalar?

After spending four days there, I think it’s the perfect amount of time for a first visit.

It gives you enough time to relax, explore the town, paddle on the lagoon, enjoy great food, and truly experience Bacalar’s slower pace.

That said, I left feeling like I had only scratched the surface.

I’ll definitely be back to discover even more of this beautiful destination.

Final Thoughts

Bacalar isn’t the kind of destination where you rush from one attraction to the next.

It’s a place where you wake up early to watch the lagoon slowly change colors, paddle without a schedule, discover small local restaurants, and remember that sometimes the best kind of travel is simply slowing down.

After four days in Bacalar, I completely understood why so many people fall in love with this hidden gem in southern Mexico.

And I already know I’ll be back.
