What to Do 3 Days in Playa del Carmen

The Perfect Riviera Maya Itinerary

Beaches, cenotes, Cozumel, slow mornings and dreamy Caribbean sunsets

If you only have a few days in the Mexican Caribbean, you’re probably wondering:
How do I experience Playa del Carmen without rushing or falling into tourist traps?

After living here, testing tours, cafés, beaches and hidden gems, I created this realistic and aesthetic itinerary for millennial travelers who love nature, slow travel, cute cafés, and pet-friendly spots.

This guide on what to do 3 days in Playa del Carmen mixes turquoise water, local culture, cenotes, snorkeling and easy day trips — so you can experience the best of the Riviera Maya without stress.

Save this one — it’ll plan your whole trip ✨

Day 1 — Sunrise beach walk + Cozumel + 5th Avenue dinner

Start your trip the Caribbean way: slow and barefoot.

Wake up early and head to the beach in Playa del Carmen for sunrise.
Soft pink skies, ocean sounds, almost no people… pure magic.

Then:
☕ Grab breakfast downtown (smoothie bowls, chilaquiles, specialty coffee).
Many cafés are pet-friendly, so your pup can join too.

Must-do: El Cielo & El Cielito tour

Take the ferry to Cozumel and book the famous “El Cielo” snorkeling tour.

Expect:

  • crystal-clear shallow water

  • starfish

  • sandbanks that look unreal

  • calm turquoise sea

It feels like a natural swimming pool.

This takes most of the day, but it’s 100% worth it.

Back in Playa:
Walk, shop and have dinner along Quinta Avenida — perfect for tacos, cocktails or live music.

Day 2 — Hidden beaches + cenote swim + jungle dinner

Today is all about nature.

Option 1: Xpu-Ha Beach

Drive 20–25 minutes south to Playa Xpu-Ha, one of the prettiest and least crowded beaches near Playa.

Soft sand, calm water, relaxed vibe.

Perfect for:

  • swimming

  • reading

  • paddle boarding

  • chilling with your dog (in quiet areas)

It’s one of those places where time slows down.

Option 2: Cenote time

Pick any nearby cenote and go for a swim.

Freshwater after the ocean feels incredibly refreshing — and cenotes are one of the most unique things about the Riviera Maya.

Evening: Dinner in Tulum

Drive to Tulum for dinner at Holistika.

Think: jungle lights, art spaces, yoga vibes, healthy food and the dreamiest boho atmosphere.

Perfect golden hour spot.

Day 3 — Snorkeling + local town vibes + turtles

Last day, but still so much to see.

Option 1: Snorkel + chill town

Visit Puerto Morelos, a small coastal town that feels way more local and relaxed than Playa.

Here you can:

  • snorkel the reef

  • walk the crooked lighthouse

  • eat fresh seafood by the water

  • spend the whole afternoon slow living

It’s peaceful and authentic.

Option 2: Swim with turtles

Head early to Akumal to swim with sea turtles in their natural habitat (always choose ethical, certified guides).

It’s truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
