There are tons of reasons to visit Vancouver, not only is a beautiful city with a vibrant multicultural setting and a variety of attractions, but it’s a very safe place to travel as a female. And for that reason, I consider it one of the best spots to solo female travel, non the less here are some of my tips before you hit up the big north. 7 Tips for Solo Female Travel in Vancouver:
1. Research the area before you go:
Before you start your trip, it is important to know as much as possible the area you will be visiting. Look up neighborhoods, attractions, and places to stay. Knowing where you are going will help you feel more confident and prepared. Here’s a free guide that might help you.
2. Stay in a safe area:
Vancouver is generally a safe city, but like any big city, there are areas that are safer than others. Look for accommodation in safe neighborhoods like Yaletown, Kitsilano, or Olympic Village, just to mention a few. But as I said the city is pretty safe, so I would just stay out of some specific neighborhoods like Downtown East Side, some areas in Gastown that are close to East Hastings, Strathcona, Chinatown and I would leave as a last option staying at any hostel or hotel in Granville Street in Downtown as even though it is a very popular night life area, it can get sketchy at night, but it’s not that bad overall.
3. Use common sense:
As a solo traveler, it’s important to use common sense and be aware of your surroundings. Never let your guard down even though the city is pretty safe. Avoid walking alone at night, especially in dimly lit areas. If you’re feeling unsafe, don’t hesitate to call an Uber or ride-sharing service.
4. Dress appropriately:
Vancouver is a casual city, so don’t feel like you need to dress up. However, it’s important to dress appropriately for the weather. Bring layers for cooler weather, a good winter jacket, waterproof shoes during rainy season (which is 80% of the year) and comfortable shoes for walking. During the end of spring and summer it can get pretty hot, so keep in mind that sunscreen and a bikini are a most.
5. Use public transportation:
Vancouver has a great public transportation system, including buses, trains, and ferries. It’s an affordable and safe way to get around the city. Here’s a guide on how to use the public transportation in Vancouver.
6. Meet other travelers:
Consider staying in a hostel or taking a guided tour to meet other travelers. This can be a great way to make new friends and explore the city together. There are so many options out there where you can go in groups to enjoy the city. Here are 10 things to do in Vancouver.
7. Trust your instincts:
If something doesn’t feel right, trust your instincts and remove yourself from the situation. It’s better to be safe than sorry.
